When you commit traffic violations, even minor ones, the New Jersey state system places points on your driver’s license. These points form a negative sign that increases each time you commit traffic offenses. When they reach twelve, expect a suspension of your state-issued driver’s license, which means until the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission removes the penalties, you can no longer legally drive.
Every traffic violation has a points level, from two points for failing to yield to pedestrians in designated areas to five points for reckless driving. Note that more serious outcomes may result from a hit and run or reckless driving ending in injury or death.
If you think you may be close to the 12-point limit, you can enroll in a special New Jersey driving course that will reduce your total by two points. You can also reduce your points total by driving responsibly. Every year you do not get a ticket or receive a driving suspension, you can remove three points from your driving record.
Whether you drive a regular vehicle or a commercial truck in New Jersey, you face many possible moving violations that you could be ticketed for. Some of the most common traffic violations include:
Speeding tickets stand out as the most common traffic offenses in New Jersey. New Jersey assigns the points penalties for speeding based on how far over the speed limit you were driving. The point values for speeding range between two and five points:
The points penalties and fines increase depending on where you speed too. When signs mark a reduction in the speed limit, such as in school zones or construction zones, the penalties can add up quickly and could leave you open to suspension of your license.
